<p><strong>1. A 5 minute warm up is a must.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li> 20 jumping jacks – Puts you on the balls of your feet and stretches out the body.</li>
<li>20 alley shuffles – Start in the alley and side-shuffle across the doubles, then singles side lines, until you have crossed a line 20 times.</li>
<li>20 quick feet – Step over a line with your right foot then the left rapidly. Each time the right foot crosses the line counts as 1, repeat until you reach 20 quick feet steps.</li>
<li>20 helicopters – Extend your arms out shoulder high. Pivot off your right then left foot as your arms swing side to side like helicopter blades.</li>
<li>20 practice swings – Go through all your ground strokes, volleys, overheads and serves 20 times to get your body ready to play.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>2. Serve into the fence or wall.</strong></p>
<p>Practice serving against a practice wall or even better, into the fence on the court.</p>
<ul>
<li> Focus on your technique as you go through your service motion.  By serving into the fence while standing on the singles side line, the ball will most of the time come back to you. Therefore you will need only a few balls to practice your serves.</li>
<li> Next stand on the baseline and face the back fence.  Now practice serving into the back fence having created a little more space between you and your target.</li>
<li> Next stand on the deuce court service line and serve cross court into the opposite deuce service court (you can add a challenge by putting 3-4 balls in the opposite service court to divide it in half – therefore creating a left and right target).</li>
<li> Now serve halfway between the service line and the baseline with the same challenges.</li>
<li> Finally, go to the baseline and serve into the opposite service court with the focus still more on the technique than power.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>3. Practice with a ball machine – with a purpose.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li> Have a remote control or limit the number of balls in the machine to about 50 or 75 balls (most ball machines hold about 2-300 balls – way to many to hit at one time effectively).</li>
<li> Have a target (one of the 4 squares on the court on the opposite side of the net).</li>
<li> Focus on control of the depth and spin on the ball rather than power.  Your game will improve when you learn not to lose before your opponent does.</li>
<li> Any balls that do not make it over the net becomes balls that you serve over the net so you practice ground strokes or volleys and serves.</li>
<li> When you pick up the balls – do wide based squats for each ball you pick up. Personal trainers will have you do squats and lunges to improve your strength and flexibility, so get your work out in while picking up the balls.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>4. Use the time between points to your advantage.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li> Following a point, you need to return the balls on your side of the court to your opponent so they can serve to start the next point.  Use that time when you return the ball to the opponent to practice your forehand or backhand.</li>
<li> Do a “drop &amp; hit” with correct technique to give the ball to your opponent.</li>
<li> This can be an “eraser” shot – to erase the feeling of the shot you just missed or a “builder” shot – to add to your successful feeling of hitting the perfect shot.</li>
<li> You will typically return 80 or more balls in a match to your opponent so they can serve to you. That is 80 chances to erase or build your own strokes.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>5. Beat the wall.</strong></p>
<p>A practice wall is the perfect partner.  It never gets tired, never talks back and gives you what you give it.</p>
<ul>
<li> Use a low compression ball or punch a hole in a regular ball so the rebound off the wall is not so fast as to destroy your technique.</li>
<li> Set a number of balls you intend to rally off your forehand, backhand or volley&#8217;s.</li>
<li> You can also serve against the wall then rally or move in closer to volley.</li>
<li> Attempt to use complete swing paths and avoid punching or shortening follow throughs on your strokes.</li>

<p>The average length of a point in a match is about <strong>4-7 seconds</strong>.</p>
<p>The tennis court is 3.5 feet longer cross court than it is down the line – safer shot with more court space and less movement to recover-to the middle of <strong>“possible returns”</strong>.</p>
<p>The tennis ball travels faster and bounces higher when the <strong>temperature is hotter and the air is dryer</strong> – like in Phoenix, Arizona.</p>
<p>Tennis balls become heavier when there is <strong>more humidity in the air</strong>, there is more drag on the ball and it travels slower through the air.</p>
<p>The term <strong>“heavy ball”</strong> refers to the amount of pace on a ball. It is the kind of ball the pros hit when they play.</p>
<p><strong>“Pace”</strong> is the combination of spin and speed – like the pros hit.</p>
<p><strong>“Racquet Back”</strong> does not refer to taking the racquet back but moving the outside foot near the ball toward the sideline.  This move opens the hip and the shoulder – which gives the appearance of “taking the racquet back”. It is not an isolated move with the shoulder.</p>
<p><strong>“Ready Position”</strong> in tennis is similar to the position of a praying mantis as he prepares to attack his prey.</p>
<p><strong>“The net”</strong> wins more points than your opponent.  Most errors in tennis are made into the net.</p>
<p><strong>“Return of serve”</strong> should resemble an approach shot more than a ground stroke – especially for club players.  That is achieved by starting back so you can move through the return of serve.</p>
<p><strong>“Footwork”</strong> – the pros average 10-12 steps between each shot they hit.</p>
<p><strong>“Grip Tension”</strong> &#8211; the pros use a very light grip tension when they hold the racquet.  On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the tightest, they typically use about a 2 to 3 grip tension level.</p>
<p>You only play <strong>10-12 minutes</strong> in an hour and half tennis match – tired yet???</p>
<p><strong>“Attention Deficit”-</strong> most error are a result of lack of attention rather than technical weakness.  On a scale of 1-10 your “attention” level should be at 8-9 or 10.  Attention levels of 7-6 or 5 will result in “unforced” errors.  Attention levels of 4-3-2 or 1 means you will probably hurt yourself or someone else.</p>

Once you have selected a target&#8230;down the line, down the center, cross court or an angle, you can begin to choose the spin and the speed you need to execute the tactical shot for the situation.</p>
<p><strong>The more options you have in the category of spin and speed, the more weapons you will have to defeat your opponent.  </strong>For example, using under spin, some side spin or top spin can provide several options for controlling a point.  Having options as far as the speed used to direct the shot you have chosen also provides another way imposing a tactical control during a point. Level 1 can be a loopy-spinny ball, level 2 is a rally speed that allows you to keep the ball in play and level 3 is as fast as you can hit and still keep the ball in play.</p>
<p><strong>The ultimate end may be to win the match but within that is the end of winning the set, the game or the point.  </strong>Regardless of the goal, begin with the end in mind.</p>

<h3><strong>My forehand/backhand keeps  missing wide?</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>Select a target    rather than just cross court.</li>
<li>Select a safer    target 2-3 feet inside the lines.</li>
<li>Keep you eyes    still until you see the blur of your racquet go past your eyes &#8211; looking    up re-directs your shot.</li>
<li>Align your feet    to get better position so your swing is more in line with your target.</li>
<li>Focus on the part    of the ball you want to hit to make the ball go toward your target (outside,    behind or inside of the ball.)</li>
<li>You may be contacting    the ball too early &#8211; be patient or too late &#8211; prepare for an earlier    contact point.</li>
</ol>
<h3><strong>My forehand/backhand keeps  going in the net?</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>Pick out an aim    point that is about the height of your opponents head above the net,    about 3-4 feet above the net.</li>
<li>Be sure to allow    your racquet head to get under the ball so you can &#8220;lift the ball&#8221;    over the net instead of driving it the same height as the net.</li>
<li>You may be contacting    the ball too late &#8211; shorten your backswing and meet the ball sooner    to get the upward arc.</li>
<li>You looked at    the net &#8211; so your hand guided the ball to your target.</li>
<li>Extend the finish    of your stroke &#8211; up and out.</li>
<li>Release the tension    in your hand as you finish your stroke to avoid pulling the racquet    down before the complete finish of the stroke.</li>
</ol>
<h3><strong>My forehand/backhand keeps  going long?</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>You are not applying    enough topspin to bring the ball down.</li>
<li>Keep your eyes    still while contacting the ball &#8211; looking up will make the fence become    a target.</li>
<li>Finish your swing    &#8211; pulling off will make the ball sail.</li>
<li>Take more adjusting    steps to get better position &#8211; out of position can cause you to alter    your swing pattern and lift the ball too high.</li>
<li>Stay down, keep    a wider stance so you can rotate into the shot instead of lifting with    the legs too early in the swing.</li>
</ol>
<h3><strong>My grip is  incorrect?</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>Mark the correct    position for the index knuckle and the heal of the hand for a forehand    and backhand.</li>
<li>Hold the racquet    by the throat with the non-hitting hand and keep the grip hand relaxed    so the non-hitting hand can turn the racquet to the correct grip position    for you -forehand or backhand.</li>
<li>Study your opponent    and lock in on their pattern of shots so you can anticipate whether    they will most likely hit to your forehand or backhand.  This &#8220;anticipation&#8221;    will give you a head start to getting the grip position early.</li>
<li>Start with the    grip that is most difficult to get to &#8211; it&#8217;s always easy to get    to your favorite grip.</li>
</ol>
<h3><strong>My timing is off?</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>Timing is an eye    function &#8211; usually you are not seeing the ball well.  Look for    the shadow of light and darkness on the ball, say &#8220;bounce&#8221; when    the ball touches the court and &#8220;touch&#8221; when you make contact As    more balls are lost between the bounce and contact.</li>
<li>Take more adjusting    steps (8-10 steps &#8211; the pros average 10-12 steps between their shots)    between each shot you make.  The extra movement will raise your    attention level and your focus level.</li>
<li>The adjusting    steps help you to establish a better position to meet the ball and produce    a better quality shot.</li>
<li>Soften your grip.     When your timing is off, your grip may be way to tight.  This tension    greatly affects your ability to time your movement, swing and relaxed    eye focus.</li>
<li>When you feed    the ball back to your opponent so they can serve, use the drop and hit    effort to practice the &#8220;feel&#8221; of how you want the stroke to feel    in the up-coming point.</li>
</ol>

<p>When you are involved in  a match and need help deciding what to do, look to your hand for the  answer.  Make a fist and then follow these simple directions:</p>
<p>P = <strong>In  Play</strong> Stick up the thumb &#8211; the most important part of the  hand which stands for &#8220;Get the ball in Play.</p>
<p>D = <strong>Direction</strong> With the thumb still up, extend the index finger and point which stands  for &#8220;Direction&#8221; which has 3 options: down the line, cross court  or down the center.</p>
<p>D = <strong>Depth</strong> With  the Thumb and first finger still extended, the next and middle finger  stands for &#8220;Depth&#8221; and there are 3 depths: near the baseline, near  the service line and near the net. With depth you will add a special  ingredient to help you &#8211; <strong>Height</strong>. Height stands for the clearance  of  your shot above the net to assist the depth of your shot.</p>
<p>S = <strong>Spin</strong> The  last two fingers are the controlling fingers.  The ring finger  stands for &#8220;Spin&#8221; and spin helps to control the depth of the shot  and there are 3 spins: topspin, underspin and sidespin.</p>
<p>S = <strong>Speed</strong> The  last finger is really important.  The little finger has huge importance,  it stands for &#8220;Speed&#8221; and there are 3 speeds: level 3 = as hard  as you can hit &#8211; without missing, level 2 = a rally speed that enables  you to keep a 10-20 ball rally going and level 1 = a loopy-spinny shot  that everyone hates to play against.</p>
<p>While coaching may not be  allowed on court, you can put the letters P, D, D, S &amp; S on the  tips of each of your 5 digits and in the palm of your hand write the  word, &#8220;coach&#8221;.</p>
<p>The coach says, &#8220;If you  need help, the answer will be in your hand.  There are 5 ways to  control a match.  The first 3; in play, direction and depth are  managed by the last 2; spin and speed.  Together that provide you  with <strong>13 options</strong> to solve the problem you are facing in the match.</p>
<p><strong>P</strong>lay = 1 option &#8211;  over the net and in the court</p>
<p><strong>D</strong>irection = 3 directions  to aim the ball</p>
<p><strong>D</strong>epth = 3 depths to  play</p>
<p><strong>S</strong>pin = 3 kinds of  spins to impart to the ball</p>
<p><strong>S</strong>peed = 3 kinds of  speeds to use</p>
<p>You do not need to try all  of these at one time. Individually or together they give you options  and a focus point in defining a purpose or plan for the defeat of your  opponent.</p>
<p>So the next time you are  facing a challenging situation in a match, look to your hand for a &#8220;Handful  of Answers.&#8221;</p>
<p>These 5 options make a great  lesson plan if you are teaching others the strategy of the game or working  on your own game.  If you or your students are unable to perform  these 5 options, you now have a great &#8220;technical&#8221; lesson plan.   Teach and learn &#8220;how&#8221; to execute the strokes necessary to achieve  the 5 strategies in the hand.</p>

<p>This <strong>(UDF)</strong> <strong>U</strong>nusual <strong>D</strong>oubles Receiving <strong>F</strong>ormation puts the receiver and partner on the same side of the court.  One player is in the deuce court near the deuce court alley and the other player is in the deuce court near the center service line.</p>
<h3>Options:</h3>
<ol>
<li>If the serve is out wide to the deuce      court, the player near the alley plays the return and the player near the      center service line moves to the ad court.  The receiving order has      now been set for the first set.</li>
<li>If the serve is up the “T”, the receiver      in the deuce court near the center service line will play the return then      move to the left for that point.  From that point on that player will      become the deuce court receiver for the remainder of the first set.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Reasons for the receiving team to use this formation:</h3>
<ol>
<li>The receiving team can create confusion      for the serving team</li>
<li>The receiving team wants to intimidate      the serving team and get inside their head regarding options instead of      focusing on the ball.</li>
<li>Helps the receiving team change momentum      in a match, set or game.</li>
</ol>
<h3>How to play teams that play the Australian Receiving Formation-Both Back for the 1<sup>st</sup> point of the match or set:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Make a decision as to where you want to      serve and don’t change your mind.  Call time and make a plan with      your net player.</li>
<li>Decide who you want to move to the ad      court by serving wide to force that player to play deuce or up the “T” to      force the back player to play the deuce court.</li>
<li>Serve to the body of the deuce court to      make it a little more difficult for the receiving team to play the return.</li>
<li>Serve using the “I” formation to limit      their options of space to return the serve and add to their confusion.</li>
<li>Practice against this formation in      practice match to recognize the options of the receiving team. Play it so      you can feel how it is to be in that position.</li>
</ol>
<h3>What not to do:</h3>
<ol>
<li>Avoid getting sucked into their style of      play. Call time out and make a game plan with your net player – have a      plan.</li>
<li>Avoid trying to serve too hard and have      to hit a lot of second serves or double fault.</li>
<li>Adjust your serving formation if they are      bothering your service games to try and create confusion on their side.</li>

<h3><strong>Doubles Situations</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>The receiving team must lob the return of serve and try to take the net at least twice in each game. This is especially effective when the serving team is serving into the sun.</li>
<li>The serving team must play out of the &#8220;I&#8221; formation or Australian formation.  Get use to using the formations so you will have confidence to use them in a match as well as experiencing how to return against the formations.</li>
<li>The receiving team starts with both players back. This takes the pressure off the receiver to make a great return to avoid getting their partner killed by the poaching player of fast charging net player</li>
<li>The serving team starts both players on the baseline. This formation helps when the receiver is killing the net player because they cannot volley or the serves are too weak.</li>
</ol>
<h3><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span>Singles Situations</strong></h3>
<ol type="1">
<li>Players must serve, return and rally 6 balls cross court before the point can begin.  Serve to the deuce court and rally deuce court then serve to the ad court and rally ad court cross court.  Keep score like in a regular match.</li>
<li>Player serves and rally out the point.  If the ball lands inside the service line the striker loses the point.  You can also play that the short ball requires the receiver of the short ball to go to the net to play out the point.</li>
<li>&#8220;3 to win a major&#8221; &#8211; (with 3 players) one player will serve 3 points.  If the server or receiver wins all 3 points they win a &#8220;major point&#8221;.  If they win 2 of the 3 points they stay on the court and a third player comes on to replace the person who lost the 1 point and a new game is played. If they win 1 of the 3 they are the one replaced by the third player who will now play 3 points against the player who stayed on the court.  This stresses the difficulty in winning 3 points in a row.  (*when the score is 30-love there is an 80% chance the person with the lead will lose the next point and 65% chance they will lose the 4<sup>th</sup> point as well).</li>
<li>&#8220;3 to win a major&#8221; &#8211; (with 2 players) one player serves and tries to win 3 points in a row to win a game.  If the receiver wins the point, they become the server and have 1 point while the former server loses all their points and starts at zero again.  Players keep games won and play out a set.</li>
</ol>
<p>Situational scoring and match play can help to focus on specific skills necessary to improve ones tactical and mental approach to the game.  They also make great coaching opportunities. The shortened scoring and sets make great challenge match format that can be completed in a short period of time.</p>
<p>This form of altered play helps to make practice exciting and more challenging so players stay focused and do not experience &#8220;mindless&#8221; practice.  They get use to specific situations and proper responses to the score or situation so they play with a &#8220;been there before&#8221; confidence in actual match play.</p>

They like to volley and want to distract you. This formation can be use by the serving team on every point as well as by the receiving team.</p>
<p>Don’t be afraid – pick a target and go for it.</p>
<h3>Reasons for the serving team to use this formation:</h3>
<p>1.	The serving team can limit the receiving teams cross court return options.<br />
2.	The serving team has a good volleyer and wants to give them more opportunities to be able to volley on every serving point.<br />
3.	The serving team to compensate for a weak server by making the receiving team focus more on the server’s partner and not allow them to “T” off on the return so easily or dink the return back to the server’s side of the court.<br />
4.	The serving team has poor ground strokes and does not want to get into long baseline exchanges.<br />
5.	The serving team wants to intimidate the receiving team and get inside their head to make decisions instead of focusing on the ball.</p>
<h3><strong>Reasons for the receiving team to use this formation:</strong></h3>
<p>1.	The receiving team has enough confidence in the receivers return that they chose not to guard the center of the court against poaches by the server’s partner.<br />
2.	The receiving team has good chip returns and wants to get into the net before the other team and put pressure on the server.<br />
3.	The receiving team’s returns very strong and puts the serving team on defense – this neutralized the serving team’s advantage.</p>
<h3><strong>How to play teams that play “I” or Modified “I” on serves:</strong></h3>
<p>1.	Make a decision as to where you want to return and don’t change your mind.<br />
2.	Lob the returns a lot if you have a good lob and on second serves.<br />
3.	Move both players back to take the pressure off the return of server and take away the net player target.</p>
<h3><strong>How to play teams that play “I” or Modified “I” on returns:</strong></h3>
<p>1.	Get to your first serve in up the middle to “C’ or at the “B” as it creates less angles on the return.<br />
2.	Serves up the middle forces the receiver’s partner to over to allow the returner room to make a cross court return.<br />
3.	If the return comes back high to the server, volley down the line.<br />
4.	Have your team play a Modified “I” or Australian against their formation.<br />
5.	Take the pace off your shots when they capture the net.  Use softer shots with more spins so they cannot use your pace to kill your partner or hit aggressive shots between you.<br />
6.	Lob the serving team right away and force them to switch and run down the lob.  You move in and now control the net.</p>
<h3><strong>What not to do:</strong></h3>
<p>1.	Avoid getting sucked into their style of play if is not your style.<br />
2.	Avoid trying to hit too hard at the net player – it will only give them pace with which to pass your partner.<br />
3.	Avoid consistently serving wide serves as it allows more angles for the returner.<br />
4.	Do not look at the “modified” player.</p>
